BBM is coming to iOS & Android

Blackberry has announced that their messaging service is coming to iOS and Android within the coming months. The service is currently only available on BlackBerry devices and allows private messages between them utilizing cellular data vs text messages. My feeling is this is a last ditch effort by BlackBerry to regain some of their users.

Back when having a BlackBerry was cool, the main thing everyone wanted was to exchange their BBM Pin number. You were not part of the “IN” crowd unless you were on BBM.  I admit I fell into that group too. There was a time period (before Verizon had the iPhone) that I was a Storm 2 user. I was subscribed to all of these different chat groups. Once Verizon got the iPhone 4, I was gone from BlackBerry, only using a secondary device for work. That phone is now gone as well.

There are other messaging services out there that allow the same thing: Apple’s own iMessage, Google Hangouts, LiveProfile, Whats App, and Facebook Messenger are a few of the popular choices. With the exception of iMessage, all of the other services are already cross platform and free. I say "no thanks" Blackberry. It's too little, too late. The majority of users have already moved on to one of the other services and will have little use for BBM. What do you guys think? Is this good or bad for BlackBerry? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
