TEKSide Presents Week in Review: 2/17-2/23

The week in Apple news started slow but it picked up some steam at the end of the week.  Lets review!!

iPad Air Only Tablet Being Update This Year

According to KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will only update the iPad Air this fall with a larger iPad and an updated iPad mini coming in 2015. Touch ID and an updated A8 processor are rumored to be in the device. Also, according to the article, Apple is focused on the iWatch.

Aside from Touch ID, what else could Apple add to the iPad Air? An LED flash for the iSight camera is the only thing I can think of.  It is incredibly light and has a fantastic battery. What are your thoughts?

Apples Next Devices to Feature A8 Processor and A Qualcomm LTE chipset

There was some speculation that Apple would be introducing a new processor with an integrated LTE chipset in their next line up of devices. Fudzillz shot that down saying Apple will utilize Qualcomm for the LTE chispet.

"Generally, the fewer chips required in a mobile device, the better optimized for battery life the device is. Apple, of course, must strive to engineer battery life parity, if not improvements, as our devices get more powerful each generation." - 9to5Mac

Also in this article, Samsung is having difficulties producing the chipset and may lead to TSMC as the primary supplier of the chipset.

Apple has always promoted software & hardware integration as a key to success. Processor & LTE radio integration would be a big step forward for any company. I say bring on better battery life and more integration.

Apple Patents Earphone Health Sensor System

"A hearing device, comprising: an audio output device configured to be positioned within a user's ear; a monitoring system located in substantially close proximity to the audio output device, the monitoring system including: an activity sensor housed in the audio output device and configured to detect head motion data; and a biometric sensor housed in the audio output device and configured to monitor biometric data pertaining to the user, wherein said monitoring system is configured for: receiving the head motion data from the activity sensor; determining whether the head motion data matches a predetermined head gesture; identifying a first action associated with the matching predetermined head gesture; receiving biometric data from the biometric sensor; determining whether the biometric data matches a predetermined physical characteristic; identifying a second action associated with the matching physical characteristic; and performing the first identified action or the second identified action on a portable electronic device in communication with the hearing device."

That is pulled directly from the patent. The source has a summary of the whole patent.  The patent hints at being able to control your iPhone with head motions. The future is coming, but don't get too excited as Apple is known for patenting things that never come to fruition.

Taiwanese Report Claims 2 New iPhones Coming but Larger Device Wont Be Called iPhone

A report from Taiwan says 2 new phones are coming. A 4.7 inch iPhone is coming but will not include the sapphire display and a 5.6 inch phone that won't be branded as an iPhone. The report also claims the 5.5 inch device will be experimental.

I call BS on the branding. I could be wrong as Apple does what they want, but I don't see them not using the iPhone brand on a larger phone. I also don't see them releasing an experimental device to the public. There a multiple reports saying 2 devices are coming, we will just have to wait and see.

iTunes Festival Coming to SXBW

Apple announced the music event will be March 11th through March 15th. The festival is very popular in London and for the first time is coming to the US.

"Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Pitbull, Keith Urban, ZEDD and more to come. All five nights of the iTunes Festival will be available to enjoy for free as a live and on-demand stream via the iTunes Store® on your iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, Mac® or PC. Performances can also be seen in the iTunes Festival app on your iOS device or with Apple TV® in stunning HD. "

Apple Meets With Tesla

Rumors went crazy About the possibility of Apple acquiring the car company.  Thats not going to happen.  What were the 2 companies talking about?  A new battery factory that Apple was invited to participate in.

Not gonna lie, I was excited about the two companies becoming one.  I don't know why but I was. I am excited that they will be working on battery technology.

Demolition Progress  For Apple Campus 2

There is progress with the Apple 2 Campus. This in an ariel shot of the demolition.

Alternate Keyboard Option Available to iOS Developers

The popular keyboard, Fleksy, released an SDK that allows developers to implement multiple keyboard options to users. So far You Doodle, Cotton Notes, Write for iOS, EVOmail and others have support for the alternate keyboard.

US Postal Service to Honor Steve Jobs With Postage Stamp

In 2015, you will be able to send letters (who does this any more?) or pay your bills with Steve Jobs watching over them. Every year the USP launches collector stamps. 2015 will be no different except that Steve Jobs will be one of the subjects. The design of the stamp is currently in development.

I am sure these will be near impossible to obtain so if you want some keep your eyes open. We have at least a year before they are available.

Amazon to Launch Apple TV Competitor Next Month

Amazon has been working on a "Web TV" box to compete with Apple & Roku. The box will undoubtedly allow streaming of Amazon Instant content and other digital content purchased from Amazon. Amazon has also been hiring game developers.

There isn't much known about the device. I would assume you would be able to listen to your music in Amazon Cloud Player in addition to watching your digital movies.

Apple Releases iOS 7.0.6, 6.1.6 for all iOS devices and 6.0.2 for Apple TV

This update patched a critical security bug that would allow a hacker access to secure information.

iOS 7.0.6

  • Data Security

Available for: iPhone 4 and later, iPod touch (5th generation), iPad 2 and later

Impact: An attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS

If you haven't updated yet you need to ASAP.

Apple Acquires Burstly

Burstly is the parent company of TestFlight. TestFlight is a popular beta testing service that allowed developers to give beta testers access with out going through the App Store. Other information available to developers include how their in-app purchases and advertisements are performing. It also gives developers other insights, like what version of Apple’s iOS mobile operating system people are using, or why their apps may have crashed during use.

I have no knowledge of TestFlight but from what I have read, this could make beta testing and feedback much easier and more informative for app developers.

Jailbreak Dev to Join Apple

iOS Jailbreaker known as win com announced he will be joining Apple some time this year. He was heavily involved in jailbreaking since the launch of the iPhone 4S. Apple has hired jailbreak developers before, Comix, Peter Hajas, to work on iOS. It will be interesting to see if his hire leads to a more secure OS or something new. Source

US Air Force Ditching Blackberry for Apple Devices

The Air Force is replacing 5,000 of its BlackBerry devices with Apple smartphones and eventually shutting down all BlackBerry devices. The Air Force wants to "eradicate the legacy devices in favor of more modern commercial technologies."

Thats a big blow to BlackBerry and a dig at their lack of innovation.
