This weeks Game Center Showdown is Peggle from PopCap. The game starts off with a brief introduction from Bjorn the Unicorn. Bjorn is one of ten Peggle Masters that will teach you how to play the game. Each Peggle Master has their own special ability to use during game play.
You man a cannon loaded with 10 balls. Below it is a field of pegs and to complete the stage, you must eliminate all of the orange pegs. The orange pegs are surrounded by a sea of blue pegs that are worth points but send your ball careening off into another direction. There is a bucket slides across the bottom of the screen. If your ball lands in the bucket, you get to reuse it rather then losing the ball. There are special purple pegs worth extra points and green pegs that will give you multi-ball. Hitting these colored pegs will activate the special powers of the Peggle Masters, such as fireballs, viewing the trajectory of the ball in advance of your shot, and multi-ball.
There are two ways to control Peggle, touch and scroll wheel. On the right side of the screen there is a scroll wheel that you can use to more accurately aim your shots. The fire button is above the scroll wheel. You can also use your finger on the field of pegs to direct the cannon. Double tapping on the screen will allow you to zoom in.
There are 55 levels and 40 challenges to complete. Peggle offers four gameplay modes; Adventure, Quick Play, Duel and Challenge. Something the game is lacking is Game Center leader boards. There is no way to compete with your friends head to head, only with Duel mode. Even that falls short as you can only play on one device so you have to be with each other. Peggle is also not optimized for iPhone 5 so you will have a black boarder as you can see in the images below. Peggle Nights is another game mode that can be unlocked via In App Purchase for a buck.
Peggle offers lots of gameplay with about 100 levels (Peggle & Peggle Nights) so you wont run through the game quickly. Even with the lack of true Game Center competing and lack of iPhone 5 support, for a dollar Peggle is still worth a download. I hope PopCap does fix these issues as they do have other popular titles that are great.
