Game Center Showdown: Plants vs Zombies 2

This weeks Game Center Showdown is Plants vs, Zombies 2 from PopCap. PvZ2 is a follow up to the very popular Plants vs Zombies. This version is free to play with in app purchases. The game starts off with a classic round from the original game. After you complete the round, you are rewarded with a bottle of hot sauce. Crazy Dave then appears and uses the hot sauce on his taco and eats it.  He decides it was so good he wants to time travel to eat the taco again. Crazy Dave over shoots and we wind up in Ancient Egypt.

The gameplay is the same as the original: defend the pyramid with flowers, pea shooters, walnuts and other types of plants from the zombies. Plants are un-lockable as you progress through the game. You also have to collect keys to unlock the bonus areas and stars to unlock the next world. Each level offers you different gameplay. Some have tombstones that are difficult to destroy, others offer stronger zombies.

In the side levels, you can unlock extra bonuses to use during normal gameplay. They range from increased sun to tombstone eating plants. Unlocking these areas requires the use of the keys you collect. After completing the standard levels, you will unlock The Pyramid of Doom. This is were the focus of the Game Center Showdown will be.  The object here is to get through as many levels as you can with out the zombies getting past the mowers. This round is different from normal gameplay. You start off with a few plants. After you complete a round you are able to chose from 3 cards. The cards will be a new plant, extra sun, a replacement mover or plant food. Any unused plant food will be carried over to the next round. Once the zombies get past the mowers the round is over and you start back at 1.

Completing the standard levels also unlocks another challenge. Three stars will appear under each level. Each star challenge has different objectives. They rage from not using a specified amount of sun to not losing any plants. The first round star is failrly easy but the challenges get harder. Two other additions to Plants vs Zombies are the treasure Yeti and Dave's jarred power ups. The Yeti appears daily and defeating him will reward you with coins or a key. The power up jars and usable during game play to help fend off the zombies and cost coins to use. Coins are collected from killing zombies but can be purchased.

Plants vs Zombies 2 is a great follow up to the original. The power ups, bonus levels and new zombies are a great refresh to keep gameplay different from the original. The best part of the game is that it is FREE!!!  You could spend money on coins if you want to but it is not required.
